But existing methods for mRNA design still live in the past. The current state-of-the-art for mRNA design relies on lab-driven design. While off-the-shelf UTR components are usable at the start, they limit the potential of mRNA in an application. Complex interactions between the UTRs and the open reading frame of an mRNA influence the propensity of an mRNA to be translated into its corresponding protein, dictating that every application deserves its own tailor-made mRNA. This subtle change could drive past the fine line defining 'acceptable' mRNA fitness versus 'exceptional' mRNA fitness.

Moreover, every use case is different. mRNA can be optimized across many different properties — and the right balance depends entirely on the application. These properties represent an assortment of knobs, which ought to be tuned according to the task at hand. However, optimizing simultaneously across them is far easier said than done. Between the costs for reagents and time constraints, most projects have to settle for a less-than-ideal solution.
